RESOLUTION; A SMOKER WHO DIDN’T WAIT FOR NEW YEAR TO QUIT

Chatting with a neighbor who is over 70 year, he narrated to me how he quit smoking. After he was done, his friend who was also in our company shared his own story.

As we step into the news in a few days time, many will marshal out their New Year resolution but only a very few of them will keep their resolution a month after. A lesson from my friends experience can help one keep a resolution not only in New Year.

He started smoking during the Nigerian – Biafran civil war according to him to calm his nerve. He became agitated and volatile as a result of being close to where the Nigerian army dropped a shelling bomb. From then on cigarette became a way of life to him. He must take it to be calm or perform any job.

When he came back from the civil war, there was this shop he usually patronizes cigarette wise. When the man noticed his affinity for packaged smoke, the man decided to turn him into a cash cow. Any time he buys a cigarette the shop man made him pay for the previous one he bought and paid for. This continued until one faithful day, he came to buy and the man asked him to pay for the previous. The man’s daughter defended him as having paid for the previous. The man beat his daughter mercilessly in his presence for saying the truth. He paid the man and walked away from both the man and cigarette till today.

The decision that cigarette will not bring him shame again, he told me made him quit cigarette till today. It is over 20 year he quite smoking, he said.
